Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge K-0481

Last weekend I activated Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge for the Parks on the Air (POTA) amateur radio program.

Wertheim’s POTA ID is K-0481. Wertheim is located in Shirley, NY on the south shore of Long Island about 50 miles east of New York City.

Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge is a beautiful and expansive natural area located in Long Island, New York. Spanning over 2,500 acres, the refuge is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including migratory birds, rare amphibians, and native plants. The refuge is situated at the mouth of the Carmans River, where it meets the Great South Bay, making it a vital location for many different species of wildlife.

Wertheim Refuge

The Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge offers a variety of activities for visitors, including hiking, fishing, and birdwatching. The refuge is home to several miles of hiking trails that wind through forests, marshes, and fields, providing opportunities to explore the natural beauty of the area. The refuge also has a number of fishing spots along the Carmans River, where visitors can cast a line and try to catch some of the local fish species.

One of the most popular activities at Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge is birdwatching. The refuge is situated along the Atlantic Flyway, which is a major migratory route for birds. Visitors can see a wide variety of bird species at the refuge, including egrets, herons, ospreys, and more.

The refuge even has a designated birdwatching platform that offers stunning views of the Carmans River and the surrounding marshes. Overall, Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge is a must-visit destination for anyone who loves nature and wants to experience the beauty of Long Island’s natural landscape.

With all this warm weather, I am planning on activating Brookhaven State Park K-2019 or Rocky Point State Forest K-8627 this weekend! Maybe I’ll have time to work both!
