TITLE
LiNK500MP MK2 Wireless GPS for Ham Radio: When Is It Coming?
DESCRIPTION
The DL4KA LiNK500MP MK2 adds powerful wireless capabilities to the Lab599 TX-500MP, but one important promised feature is still missing: wireless access to its built-in GPS/GNSS data through a virtual COM port.
For portable ham radio and off-grid field communications, this would allow applications such as Winlink and JS8Call to receive position and timing data without adding another cable between the radio interface and a laptop or tablet. It could also give the TX-500MP and LiNK500MP MK2 combination an important capability missing from the Icom IC-705’s wireless workflow.
Before publishing this video, I contacted Oliver at DL4KA and asked him to explain what is preventing the feature from being implemented.
The hardware has a single wireless Bluetooth COM port that must be shared between CAT control, remote control, robust packet data, GPS and other functions. If GPS occupied that channel continuously, some of those other wireless functions would become unavailable.
Oliver’s proposed solution is clever: the LiNK500MP MK2 could periodically retrieve and store its latest GPS data whenever the Bluetooth channel is available, then make that information accessible to Windows applications through a virtual COM port.
That would provide operators with recently captured position and timing data without interrupting normal wireless CAT control and data-mode operation.
The question is therefore no longer whether wireless GPS access is technically possible. The question is: when will it be available?
For operators using Winlink position reporting, JS8Call, portable data modes or off-grid communications, integrated wireless GPS would make the TX-500MP and LiNK500MP MK2 combination significantly more capable in the field.
If this feature matters to your operating workflow, leave a constructive comment and let DL4KA know that you would like to see a development timeline.
The Lab599 TX-500MP is an outstanding field radio, and the LiNK500MP MK2 is far more than a basic sound-card interface. Wireless audio and CAT control, robust packet capability, GPS and radio integration in a single compact device give it enormous potential. Now it needs the software support required to deliver the complete wireless experience.
If you enjoy practical portable, emergency and off-grid ham-radio content, please like the video, subscribe and share it with another operator who uses—or is considering—the Lab599 TX-500MP and LiNK500MP MK2.
